When Every Second Counts: First Aid Skills Come to Life in Armavir

When every second counts, knowing how to respond can save a life. In Armenia’s Armavir region, COAF is strengthening this critical capacity—first by equipping teachers with lifesaving skills, and then by bringing those skills to life through hands-on student learning.
In February, teachers from 11 beneficiary schools gathered in Aghveran for a three-day intensive Fundamentals of First Aid Training of Trainers. In March, that knowledge extended beyond the classroom, as students took part in a dynamic first aid competition—transforming learning into action.
Together, these efforts reflect a growing culture of preparedness across COAF-supported communities.
Learning to Respond with Confidence

During the February training, educators immersed themselves in both theory and hands-on practice, preparing not only to act in emergencies, but also to teach these essential skills to their students.
For many participants, the experience reshaped long-held assumptions about first aid.
“I am a biologist, and this was my first time participating in such training,” one teacher shared. “I learned how first aid differs depending on the age of the person—especially children. Before, we didn’t always emphasize calling medical assistance at the right time, or the importance of specific interventions like artificial respiration for children. These were truly new insights for me.”
From Knowledge to Practice
In March, students from beneficiary schools stepped into high-stakes, simulated scenarios designed to test their skills and decision-making. From treating fractures to managing bleeding and responding to unconsciousness, each situation required quick thinking, collaboration, and composure.

Teams demonstrated not only what they had learned, but how effectively they could apply it. The competition brought an added layer of energy and urgency, encouraging students to move beyond theory and build real confidence in their abilities.
Addressing Critical Knowledge Gaps
These initiatives respond to a broader need: foundational first aid knowledge is often limited, outdated, or misunderstood. By equipping both teachers and students with accurate, practical skills, COAF is helping to close this gap at the community level.
Most importantly, the initiative fosters a culture of care where knowledge is shared, responsibility is collective, and communities are better prepared to protect one another when every second counts.
