From Village-Based Afterschool Programs, to the Hospital Ward: Sonya's Journey to Becoming a Doctor

The day begins with patients.

There are symptoms to assess, lab results to review, and difficult conversations to navigate. Together with each patient, Sonya Sardaryan weighs treatment options, answers questions, and charts the next step forward.

Only after stepping into the clinic, she says, did she understand what it truly means to become a physician.

"It is here that you realize the enormous responsibility you carry," she says. "You truly feel the weight of the white coat on your shoulders."

Now completing her clinical residency, Sonya has reached a milestone she once thought might be beyond her reach.

How COAF Transformed Sonya’s Trajectory

As a girl growing up in rural Armenia, Sonya admired the doctors she met through COAF's health programs. Among them was Dr. Lusine Sahakyan, who led COAF's Health Programs at the time, and became an early source of inspiration.

"I remember looking up to Dr. Lusine with such admiration," Sonya recalls. "I wondered whether one day little Sonya could become a doctor, too."

The question stayed with her.

"Through COAF's clubs, children from rural communities gain knowledge. They develop as individuals, discover their strengths, and become active members of society."

Her first steps toward an answer came not in medical school, but in a COAF Healthy Lifestyle afterschool club. Lessons about health, wellness, and community introduced her to a world she had never imagined for herself. The experience sparked a curiosity that steadily grew into purpose.

When she was admitted to Yerevan State Medical University, a COAF scholarship made it possible for her to continue her education.

Looking back, Sonya sees those opportunities as transformative.

"Through COAF's clubs, children from rural communities gain knowledge," she says. "They develop as individuals, discover their strengths, and become active members of society."

Returning to the Communities That Raised Her

These days, Sonya often finds herself back in the villages where her own journey began—not as a student, but as a physician and educator.

This year, she volunteered with COAF's Healthy Lifestyle Public Awareness Campaign, traveling across Armenia to help teach children about disease prevention and healthy living. The campaign has already reached five regions, bringing practical health education directly into rural communities.

Each visit reminds her why the work matters.

"Every time we receive incredible energy from the children," she says. "You see it in their curious eyes and their genuine interest."

The campaign evolves with the needs of the communities it serves. Last year, discussions centered on teenagers, focusing on the risks of smoking, alcohol, and drug use. This year, the emphasis shifted to younger children, teaching simple habits—such as proper handwashing—that can prevent illness long before medical treatment becomes necessary.

For Sonya, she understand that even the most fundamental conversations about healthy habits can shape someone's life.

The Road Ahead

Ten years from now, Sonya envisions herself practicing in a modern multidisciplinary hospital in Armenia, perhaps in Shirak, serving the communities that made her who she is. She hopes facilities such as the Artik Medical Center will continue to grow, allowing more physicians to provide high-quality care close to home.

It is a future she once struggled to imagine for herself.

Today, she wears the white coat she once admired from afar. And with every patient she treats and every child she encourages, she completes a cycle that began years ago, passing the torch to the next generation.
